Power to the People: An Evening with Tom Heap

Fri 21 May 2027

The power of the sun and wind belongs to everyone – not big corporations, not hostile states. It can be ours, and that’s why it will win.

Broadcaster and author Tom Heap, best known for presenting the BBC’s Countryfile, Radio 4’s Rare Earth, and Sky News’ The Climate Show, offers a fresh take on the climate debate: going green no longer has to be selfless – it simply makes economic sense.

Homes generate solar power, communities own wind turbines, and countries harness the natural resources around them. Green energy is too often presented as expensive medicine imposed from above. But it can – and should – work for everyone. And now, it does.

I’ve spent my career exploring how we can live alongside the natural world, and this is the most exciting moment yet. Even before conflict in the Middle East intensified, solar power was growing faster than any energy technology in history. Combined with wind, it’s about to transform the way we live.”

We need to stop burning fossil fuels – and now we finally have the tools to do it.

“Fossil fuels haven’t just damaged the planet; they’ve driven conflict between nations. Oil and gas are limited, controlled and fought over. But you can’t own the wind. Sunlight can’t be blocked in the Strait of Hormuz.

Tom tackles myths surrounding renewable energy – from cost and public support to China’s role and the supposed dominance of fossil fuels – while also challenging some environmental orthodoxies.
